Description

The Pontiac GTO is a piece of automotive history: it arguably invented the “muscle car” as we know it, and it remains a highly desirable classic to this day. This particular example boasts a Tri-Power V8 engine and a 5-speed manual transmission swap. This GTO also touts some nice features like 14-inch Cragar wheels, power steering, and an MSD ignition system, further enhancing its appeal.

1964 Pontiac GTO Coupe, finished in white with a blue interior.

  • This GTO’s factory-fitted transmission has been replaced by a Tremec 5-speed manual, according to the selling dealer.
  • A partial list of notable currently installed equipment reported by the selling dealer includes 14-inch Cragar wheels, power steering, vinyl upholstery, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel.
  • The original GTO is arguably the first true American muscle car. Pontiac wanted to release a more powerful version of the Tempest, but parent company General Motors had a 330-cubic-inch limit on engine displacement in this segment. The rule didn’t apply to option packages, so Pontiac dropped a 389-cubic-inch V8 into the Tempest and offered it at an extra cost. Sales started in 1964, and the GTO was made a standalone model in 1966. The nameplate finally retired in 2006.
  • Power comes from a 389-cubic-inch Tri-Power V8, rated at about 330 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.
